A guide to better Sail Routes

May 9, 2026 • 3 min read

Understand how you actually sail, and plan better in the process.

The best sailing days are the ones where you leave the dock prepared.

You already know how the day is likely to unfold. You know how the weather will change when the current turns in your favor, and whether a small delay along your trip will mean a late arrival or a tougher journey in bad weather.

Good planning makes for a better day on the sea, especially for cruising sailors who travel longer distances.

That is exactly the kind of boating Orca is built for, and this guide will help you understand how to plan better sail routes and fine-tune your routes to better match your preferences and your boat.

An introduction to Sail Routes

Sailboats are slow, and once you commit to a longer trip, you are committed to the journey itself.

This makes planning important, and planning a sailing trip is an incredibly complex challenge that requires understanding the weather, currents, waves, and how you and your boat’s performance are affected by these conditions.

Orca’s Sail Routes is designed to help you solve that challenge. It combines weather forecasts, currents data, and your boat’s polar diagram to find the best path to your destination. To create a Sail Route in Orca, select a destination from the chart or via search and select Sail as your routing mode.

Creating a Sail Route from Oslo to Skagen is effortless.

Sail Routing is not just about finding a path – it helps you understand how the trip is likely to unfold, lets you view forecasted conditions along the route, easily compare alternatives, and ultimately make better decisions.

The magic of Sail Routes is understanding how the conditions will change. For this trip, a long upwind segment, followed by reaching in relatively calm waves.

Polar Diagrams

Polar Diagrams describe how quickly a sailboat can travel at a certain wind speed and direction. These diagrams are essential for Sail Routes, because they let the routing system understand how your boat will travel through the forecasted weather.

To get better Sail Routes in Orca, the first step you should take is to select your boat’s Polar Diagram via Main Menu > My Boat > Polar Performance. Search for your boat’s sail number if you have an ORC rating, and if not, your boat type. If you do not find a match for your boat type, you can generate a polar by entering your expected boat speed at a few wind angles.

Direct integration with the ORC database makes finding your Polar Diagram easy.

Polar Diagrams are theoretical, and they represent your boat’s expected speed when sailed to perfection. Few cruising sailors are able to consistently reach their polar targets, which means that a typical Polar Diagram is too optimistic to be used as a realistic baseline for a Sail Route.

Polar Performance Instruments

To create realistic route estimates, Sail Routing needs to understand how you and your boat actually perform, not just your theoretical polars. That is where Orca’s Polar Performance instruments come in.

Polar Performance instruments show you how well you are sailing versus your polars. You can add these to any of your instrument panels by long-pressing on an instrument panel and then selecting the Sailing performance instrument category.

Adding Polar Performance instruments to your sailing instrument panel helps you track and understand your sailing performance.

While performance-oriented sailors may want to add most of Orca’s Polar Performance instruments to their main sailing panels, you get very far with Polar Performance and then add a Target Beat Angle instrument next to your True Wind Angle instrument. Once you’ve sailed a few sessions with these, you will have a good understanding of how you typically sail versus your theoretical polars.

Armed with this knowledge, you can then adjust your Polar scaling and Polar beat angle offset via Main Menu > My Boat > Routing Settings. With these changes, your Sail Routes will now be a lot more representative of how you actually sail.

Better data with Orca Core

These powerful sailing tools depend on reliable wind data.

Orca’s sailing tools, such as Sail Routes, Laylines, and Polar Performance instruments, all become more useful when the underlying data is stable and accurate. If wind measurements fluctuate or contain systematic errors, the routing and sailing instruments become less reliable as well.

That is why Orca Core comes with a built-in Sailing Processor. The Sailing Processor improves wind data quality by smoothing noise and correcting measurement inconsistencies, creating a more stable picture of how the boat is moving through the wind.

While the Sailing Processor is mostly self-adjusting, to get the very best results, you should calibrate the processor for True Wind Tacking via Main Menu > My Boat > Calibrate TWD. This calibration will give more accurate True Wind Angle data, which in turn means your Polar beat angle offset becomes more representative.

A smart upgrade

Orca helps you close the loop between planning and navigation. It gives you the tools to learn more about how you actually sail, and as a consequence, helps you plan better and make better decisions on the water.

On top of this, it delivers fantastic charts, accurate weather forecasts, AIS, instruments, autopilot, and radar integration – and it runs on your phone, tablet, Mac, and the Orca Display.
